This half-acre parcel was donated by two sisters: Elza F. Saletnik and Jennie E. Saletnik, long time residents of Pascoag, Rhode Island. Both sisters, at the time of their donation, were residents of Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. In their later years of life, both Elza and Jennie, wanted to settle their estate and divest themselves of burdensome yearly town property taxes. Their intention was to use the donation as a means to offset other taxes they were to pay as part of their estate planning and settlement. While the land trust cannot guarantee any tax relief or financial reward from the donation of property, many have been able to use the donation to leverage and reduce other tax responsibilities.
At first glance, the donation of a half-acre parcel may not seem to be of interest to a land preservation organization. The land, in this case, was connected to an already existing protected property. Adjacent and attached to the Edward D. Vock Conservation Area, the Saletnik donation became a very attractive parcel to accept. We are eternally grateful to Elza and Jennie for their donation.
